Questions for Sabbath, Sept. 30

Romans 6:15-23

1. Is 6:15 asking the same question as 6:1?

2. Verse 17:“slaves to sin” – did YOU used to be a slave to sin? When telling your conversion story, would you have described yourself that way?

3. Verse 18: “free from sin” Can you think of another Bible passage with similar language?

4. Verse 19 “offer … parts of your body” – what’s Paul talking about?

5. Verse 23, the “classic” verse of this passage. Re-write it in your own words.

Thank you for such thoughtful questions, Jeff. You set us up well for October 7's discussion of Romans 7:1-12. We talked a bit more about what being dead to the law might mean for us--when we have experienced being alive to the Spirit--and how that often goes along with dying. I appreciated Dan's insights on how dying in order to be resurrected is so very hard because it goes against every fiber of our being which pushes us TO LIVE. We were reassured that the law is bigger than we can even imagine and that sin/Satan so often wants us to shrink it down to a tidy list and it is this that we have to die to--dying to the thought that we can do it. I so much appreciated everyone's contribution to this and the encouragement that living in the Spirit brings joy and the fruits that He promises. George Knight's book has been very helpful to me, personally. I'm looking forward to the positive picture we get of the Spirit's work in chapter eight!!
